When Freckles was turned in to the Maui Humane Society her owners said, "we don't want her anymore, she just runs away all the time." Well, with a life like she had, who wouldn't? Freckles had heartworm, hookworm, ear mites, a chronic fungal ear infection, and erlichiosis when she was brought in. Nobody wanted an old (about 8), sick dog. Freckles had been beaten, and didn't want anything to do with a leash, probably because she had been chained up a lot. My friend Jocelyn Bouchard, who works at the Maui Humane Society and has two Conant's BCs, emailed me with a request to help find a home for her. I was going to Maui to a show, so I said I'd bring her back and find her a home. Then Jocelyn sent a picture, and that was that. Freckles is still always tempted to go hunting when the leash is off, but lately she sticks around if there's a ball to chase. Most of the time, she sticks to me like glue. She is a superb hunter and can herd sheep, but has too much bite. Nowadays the best things are that she no longer cringes when you reach for her and she will dance with you if you ask politely.
